For The On-Call
A journal for the ones who carry the ward home.
Where the debrief nobody schedules can happen.
Medicine produces experiences that need somewhere to go. The case that went wrong, the one that went right and still won't leave you, the family meeting, the 4 a.m. decision made on incomplete information — the profession schedules no debrief for any of it, and most of it can't be said aloud anywhere.
A journal is the oldest tool for this, and doctors have kept them for as long as there have been doctors. The modern complication is where the writing lives. Reflections about your working life sit badly in a consumer cloud app — not because you'd write identifiable details, but because the ambient possibility of a reader changes what gets written, and this writing only helps when it's whole.
The Sealed Journal keeps it whole: encrypted on your own device before storage, no server, no account, readable by no one without your passphrase. It is not a medical record system and makes no compliance claims — it's the other notebook, the one about you. On call, offline in the basement of the hospital, it works, because it never needed a connection.
The Typewriter Experience
The cursor stays. The text moves.
In Write mode, your cursor remains exactly at the centre of the screen. The page rises up to meet it. Past words fade into soft shadow at the edges, leaving the present sentence in clear focus. Switch to Read mode and the entry flattens into an evenly lit document — the fade is for writing; the flat light is for returning.
Radical Privacy & Encryption
AES-256-GCM, in your browser, with a key only you derive.
- ·PBKDF2 key derivation at 600,000 iterations — the OWASP 2024 recommendation. Existing journals upgrade transparently on first unlock.
- ·No accounts, no telemetry, no analytics, no cookies, no third-party scripts.
- ·IndexedDB storage with a localStorage fallback. Encrypted before it touches the disk.
- ·The file is not minified. You can read the source. We'd rather you trust it than us.
What It Does Not Do
- ✕No word counts chasing you across the screen.
- ✕No formatting toolbar wrestling your thoughts into neatness.
- ✕No cloud sync. No distant servers. Your words stay yours.
- ✕No social sharing. Your vulnerability is not content.
- ✕No AI assistant finishing your sentences.
- ✕No streak counters. No guilt. No gamification.
- ✕No subscriptions. No mood trackers. No noise.

Is this HIPAA-compliant?
It isn't a system for patient records at all, and we make no compliance claims. It's a personal journal. What belongs in it is your experience of the work; patient documentation belongs in your institution's systems.
When would I write — there's no time.
The entries that matter are often four sentences after a shift. Autosave means an entry interrupted by a page is an entry, not a loss.
Why not just talk to colleagues?
Do — nothing here replaces people. The page is for the version that comes out before it's ready to be said to anyone.
