For The Counsel

A journal for people who think in confidences.

You of all people know where copies end up.

Nobody understands the afterlife of a document like a lawyer. You have watched emails, drafts, and diaries surface in discovery, and you write accordingly — professionally, and then, without quite noticing, personally too. The habit of assuming a future reader is useful in practice and corrosive in a diary.

Yet lawyers may need a private page more than most: the case that follows you home, the client you can't discuss with anyone, the ethical knot at 11 p.m. A journal for that has one requirement above all — that it not become someone else's exhibit by existing on someone else's server.

The Sealed Journal's architecture is one you can evaluate professionally: entries encrypted on your device with a passphrase only you hold, no company copy, no account, nothing hosted. We make no claims about privilege — you know better than we do that privilege is a legal doctrine, not a product feature. What we can state precisely: there is no third-party custodian, and nothing exists to subpoena from us.

The Typewriter Experience

The cursor stays. The text moves.

In Write mode, your cursor remains exactly at the centre of the screen. The page rises up to meet it. Past words fade into soft shadow at the edges, leaving the present sentence in clear focus. Switch to Read mode and the entry flattens into an evenly lit document — the fade is for writing; the flat light is for returning.

Radical Privacy & Encryption

AES-256-GCM, in your browser, with a key only you derive.

  • ·PBKDF2 key derivation at 600,000 iterations — the OWASP 2024 recommendation. Existing journals upgrade transparently on first unlock.
  • ·No accounts, no telemetry, no analytics, no cookies, no third-party scripts.
  • ·IndexedDB storage with a localStorage fallback. Encrypted before it touches the disk.
  • ·The file is not minified. You can read the source. We'd rather you trust it than us.

What It Does Not Do

  • No word counts chasing you across the screen.
  • No formatting toolbar wrestling your thoughts into neatness.
  • No cloud sync. No distant servers. Your words stay yours.
  • No social sharing. Your vulnerability is not content.
  • No AI assistant finishing your sentences.
  • No streak counters. No guilt. No gamification.
  • No subscriptions. No mood trackers. No noise.

Licensing & Gift Copy

One purchase covers up to three of your personal devices. It also includes a second untouched copy of the file — meant to be given to one person you trust. Lifetime updates. 30-day, no-questions refund. If you run a clinic, school, or workplace and want a copy for everyone, ask us about a site licence.

One Purchase. Yours Forever.

Questions

Does writing in this journal make my notes privileged?

No, and we won't pretend otherwise. Privilege depends on doctrine and circumstances, not software. What the design changes is custody: your writing exists only on your device, encrypted.

Can I keep client-identifying details in it?

That's a professional-responsibility judgment for you, not us. Many lawyers journal around the matter — the pressure, the decision, the day — without identifying details. The walls are real either way.

What would you produce if served?

The truthful answer to any request: we hold nothing. No accounts, no entries, no metadata about your writing. There is no us in your journal.

The cursor will be there when you return.

Centered. Blinking. Patient.
