Will my journal be used to train an AI?

What you write here feeds nothing.

It's a fair question now, and reading terms of service updates from journaling and notes apps over the past few years will not reassure you. "To provide and improve AI features" is doing a lot of quiet work in a lot of privacy policies. Even companies acting in good faith face a plain incentive: a large corpus of intimate, well-written, dated human experience is exactly what language models are hungry for.

You don't have to speculate about anyone's intentions if the data never leaves your hands. The Sealed Journal has no AI features, no analytics on your writing, and — the part that actually settles the question — no copy of your entries anywhere but your own device, encrypted with your passphrase. Your journal cannot train a model for the same reason it cannot leak, be sold, or be summarised into an "insight": it is not in anyone's possession but yours.

We think a journal should be one of the few remaining rooms where you are not producing data for anything. What you write here feeds nothing. It just stays written.

The Typewriter Experience

The cursor stays. The text moves.

In Write mode, your cursor remains exactly at the centre of the screen. The page rises up to meet it. Past words fade into soft shadow at the edges, leaving the present sentence in clear focus. Switch to Read mode and the entry flattens into an evenly lit document — the fade is for writing; the flat light is for returning.

Radical Privacy & Encryption

AES-256-GCM, in your browser, with a key only you derive.

  • ·PBKDF2 key derivation at 600,000 iterations — the OWASP 2024 recommendation. Existing journals upgrade transparently on first unlock.
  • ·No accounts, no telemetry, no analytics, no cookies, no third-party scripts.
  • ·IndexedDB storage with a localStorage fallback. Encrypted before it touches the disk.
  • ·The file is not minified. You can read the source. We'd rather you trust it than us.

What It Does Not Do

  • No word counts chasing you across the screen.
  • No formatting toolbar wrestling your thoughts into neatness.
  • No cloud sync. No distant servers. Your words stay yours.
  • No social sharing. Your vulnerability is not content.
  • No AI assistant finishing your sentences.
  • No streak counters. No guilt. No gamification.
  • No subscriptions. No mood trackers. No noise.

Licensing & Gift Copy

One purchase covers up to three of your personal devices. It also includes a second untouched copy of the file — meant to be given to one person you trust. Lifetime updates. 30-day, no-questions refund. If you run a clinic, school, or workplace and want a copy for everyone, ask us about a site licence.

Questions

Does The Sealed Journal have any AI features?

No, deliberately. No summaries, no sentiment analysis, no prompts generated from your entries. The absence is part of the design.

Could that change in a future update?

A future version could add features, but it cannot retroactively reach your entries: they exist only on your device, encrypted. No update can phone home data we never receive.

What about my clipboard, keyboard, or browser extensions?

Those sit outside any journal app's control. If you're serious, journal in a browser profile without extensions and be mindful of third-party keyboards on mobile.

The cursor will be there when you return.

Centered. Blinking. Patient.
