# The Sealed Journal vs Standard Notes.

Standard Notes is one of the few products in this category we'd trust ourselves: open source, independently audited, end-to-end encrypted, zero-knowledge by architecture. If you need encrypted notes that follow you everywhere, it is a serious and honorable answer.

But it is a notes system. There is an account, a server (one that cannot read your notes, but a server), a subscription that unlocks tiers, tags, editors, files. It is built for keeping and organizing — a second brain with the door locked.

A journal is a different room. The Sealed Journal has no account to create, no sync to configure, no tiers, and nothing to organize. The practice it serves isn't storage; it's the twenty minutes with the cursor. We agree with Standard Notes about almost everything except what this particular room is for.

## Questions

### Isn't zero-knowledge sync exactly as private as no sync?

Cryptographically, it's very strong. Structurally, there is still an account, a server, metadata, and an ongoing relationship with a company. We removed the relationship, which is a different kind of guarantee.

### Couldn't I just keep a journal inside Standard Notes?

You could, and it would be a decent one. You would also be journaling inside note-taking software, with everything else a click away. The difference sounds small and shows up on day forty.

### Standard Notes is open source. Why isn't The Sealed Journal?

The file is deliberately unminified and its hashes are published — you can read every line of what you bought before you trust it. We'd rather you trust the source you can read than the license label.
