The Typewriter Engine

A typewriter journal where the cursor never leaves the middle.

The text moves around you. Past sentences fade into soft shadow at the edges. The present moment stays lit.

Most editors scroll your thoughts off the bottom of the screen. The Eternal Journal does the opposite: the page rises up to meet the cursor, which stays exactly where your eye already is.

It's a small mechanical idea borrowed from typewriters. In practice, it changes the texture of writing — slower, more deliberate, more like talking quietly to yourself.

Switch to Read mode and the page flattens out into a calm, evenly lit document. The fade is for writing; the flat light is for returning.

The Typewriter Experience

The cursor stays. The text moves.

In Write mode, your cursor remains exactly at the centre of the screen. The page rises up to meet it. Past words fade into soft shadow at the edges, leaving the present sentence in clear focus. Switch to Read mode and the entry flattens into an evenly lit document — the fade is for writing; the flat light is for returning.

What It Does Not Do

  • No word counts chasing you across the screen.
  • No formatting toolbar wrestling your thoughts into neatness.
  • No cloud sync. No distant servers. Your words stay yours.
  • No social sharing. Your vulnerability is not content.
  • No AI assistant finishing your sentences.
  • No streak counters. No guilt. No gamification.
  • No subscriptions. No mood trackers. No noise.

Questions

What does typewriter scrolling actually do?

It keeps the line you are typing in the vertical centre of the screen, so the page moves under you instead of your eyes tracking down the display.

Is there a typing sound or mechanical effect?

No. The typewriter reference is about the scrolling behaviour and the single-minded focus, not skeuomorphic clatter.

Can I turn the fade-out of older text off?

The fade is part of the writing view. Switch to reading mode when you want the whole entry rendered plainly.

The cursor will be there when you return.

Centered. Blinking. Patient.
