# A journal for year four of the PhD.

_The document with no committee._

A PhD is a years-long apprenticeship in being evaluated. Everything you write has a reader with power over you — advisor, committee, reviewer two — and by the middle years, many students report that they can no longer write anything without that tribunal in their heads.

Which is exactly why the other document matters: the one with no committee. Where the research diary can admit the result looks shaky, where you can write “I don't know if I want this anymore” without it becoming true by being seen, where the small wins get recorded because nobody else will record them. Academics who keep such a journal tend to guard it fiercely — it's the one text that's allowed to be bad, and therefore the one where thinking actually happens.

The Sealed Journal gives that document real walls: encrypted locally, no cloud, no account tied to your university or anything else. It survives the laptop migration as one file. And unlike your dissertation, it will never, ever be reviewed.

## Questions

### Should I keep research notes in it?

Keep the citable, shareable research record in your reference and notes systems. This is for the part of the work that's about you — the doubts, decisions, and stamina. They deserve different architectures.

### My university licenses the tools I use. Does that matter?

Institutional accounts mean institutional custody and offboarding. This journal has no account at all — it can't be revoked when you graduate, leave, or move continents for a postdoc.

### What about writing every day for the habit?

If it helps, one line counts. There's no streak and no minimum; the journal doesn't join your committee.
