For The Ones Leaving
A Day One alternative without the subscription.
You liked the journaling. It's the renewing you're done with.
Almost nobody who searches for this hates Day One. It is polished, it is loved, and it earned both. But it has steadily become a membership, and somewhere between the tier restructures and the renewal emails, a question forms: should a diary have a billing relationship?
A journal is a decades-long practice. Decades of renewals — with prices and tiers that can change under you — is a strange substrate for it. The Sealed Journal takes the other path: pay once, own a file. The file is the product; there is nothing to renew because there is nothing running.
To be fair about the trade: you give up the photo timelines, the maps, the apps, the automatic sync. If those are what you loved, Day One remains the best at them. If what you loved was writing in private, that costs $24, once.

The Typewriter Experience
The cursor stays. The text moves.
In Write mode, your cursor remains exactly at the centre of the screen. The page rises up to meet it. Past words fade into soft shadow at the edges, leaving the present sentence in clear focus. Switch to Read mode and the entry flattens into an evenly lit document — the fade is for writing; the flat light is for returning.
Radical Privacy & Encryption
AES-256-GCM, in your browser, with a key only you derive.
- ·PBKDF2 key derivation at 600,000 iterations — the OWASP 2024 recommendation. Existing journals upgrade transparently on first unlock.
- ·No accounts, no telemetry, no analytics, no cookies, no third-party scripts.
- ·IndexedDB storage with a localStorage fallback. Encrypted before it touches the disk.
- ·The file is not minified. You can read the source. We'd rather you trust it than us.
What It Does Not Do
- ✕No word counts chasing you across the screen.
- ✕No formatting toolbar wrestling your thoughts into neatness.
- ✕No cloud sync. No distant servers. Your words stay yours.
- ✕No social sharing. Your vulnerability is not content.
- ✕No AI assistant finishing your sentences.
- ✕No streak counters. No guilt. No gamification.
- ✕No subscriptions. No mood trackers. No noise.

Can I import my Day One entries?
Not automatically — there is no importer today. Export your archive from Day One and keep it; some people paste across the handful of entries that still matter and let the rest be the past. We'd rather tell you that plainly than promise a migration.
What exactly do I give up?
Photos, locations, native apps, cloud sync, and prompts. What you keep: your words, encrypted on your own machine, in a file no company can reprice, sunset, or acquire out from under you.
What happens if Offline.Ltd disappears?
The file keeps working. It is complete, offline, and yours, with published hashes and readable source. That is the point of the shape.
